January 15 is the day of creation of the largest electronic encyclopedia in the world – Wikipedia.

I am sure that each of us, looking for information, first, turns to Wikipedia. It is the fifth most visited site in the world. But I think not everyone knows the details of its creation and functioning, doesn't it? For example, the founder of "Wikipedia" is not only Jimmy Wales, but also Larry Sanger, who has the idea of applying the wiki concept to "Wikipedia".

This concept involves the use of such a structure of the website, which allows Internet users to independently change and supplement the site. In total, there are 314 Wikipedia's in different national languages. Ukrainian Wikipedia ranks 17th in the number of articles.
Wikipedia does not claim the truth of the information published in it. In order to confirm this or that information and allow the reader to check its veracity, links to sources are added to the articles. Thus, readers are responsible for checking the veracity of Wikipedia articles. It should be remembered that in order to write a scientific paper, it is necessary to
look for other sources of information.

«…We always point out that Wikipedia should not be used as a source for students' research papers, because it is the starting point, not the end point of research, especially in higher education. If a 13-year-old girl writes something and posts a link to Wikipedia, that's some progress for her. But in university you can read a Wikipedia article to start, but then you have to dig deeper»

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales

Sumy State University is the first higher education institution in Ukraine to sign a memorandum of cooperation with the NGO "Wikimedia Ukraine" (2012). The work of the university community on Wikipedia is considerable and includes publications about the university, its structural units, and scientists of SumDU.
In 2020, the SumDU Library launched the project "SumDU on the Wikipedia pages ". We accept applications for the preparation of materials for the online encyclopedia. We invite everyone to join the Wikipedia project and take part in creating new publications.
