The aim of the paper «Sustainable Value Management - New Concepts and Contemporary Trends» is to present the findings of our own questionnaire-based quantitative study carried out in 2018. The study attempted to identify the correlations among the following variables: people-oriented management, non-people-oriented management, direct active and passive participation, and engagement in work. Two research questions drove the research process: (RQ1). What are the links between people-oriented management and non-people-oriented management, direct (active and passive) participation, and work engagement? (RQ2) Does direct participation (active and passive) mediate the relationship between people and non-people-oriented management and employees’ engagement? Research findings revealed that people-oriented management and active participation (i.e., co-deciding) are the most significant for work engagement. Not only does non-people-oriented management entail a low level of engagement but a lower level of direct participation as well. A structural equation model demonstrated that perceived people-oriented management and active participation were strong, positive, and significant predictors of work engagement.

Pathogenic bacteria are the main problem in hospital- and community-acquired infections. As bacteria continue to develop more resistance to antibiotics, it is imperative to develop antibacterial treatment strategies. Written by experts from all over the world, this book examines pathogenic bacteria and their link to multidrug resistance. Over thirteen chapters, it presents examples of pathogenesis, virulence factors, and treatment strategies.

Given that continuing antigenic shift and drift of inﬂuenza A viruses result in the escape from previous vaccine-induced immune protection, a universal inﬂuenza vaccine has been actively sought. However, there were very few vaccines capable of eliciting crossgroup ant-inﬂuenza immunity. Here, we designed two novel composite immunogens containing highly conserved T-cell epitopes of six inﬂuenza A virus internal antigens, and expressed them in DNA, recombinant adenovirus-based (AdC68) and recombinant vaccinia vectors, respectively, to formulate three vaccine forms. The introduction of the two immunogens via a DNA priming and viral vectored vaccine boosting modality afforded cross-group protection from both PR8 and H7N9 inﬂuenza virus challenges in mice. Both respiratory residential and systemic T cells contributed to the protective efﬁcacy. Intranasal but not intramuscular administration of AdC68 based vaccine was capable of raising both T cell subpopulations to confer a full protection from lethal PR8 and H7N9 challenges, and blocking the lymphatic egress of T cells during challenges attenuated the protection. Thus, by targeting highly conserved internal viral epitopes to efﬁciently generate both respiratory and systemic memory T cells, the sequential vaccination strategy reported in «Antivirals for Emerging Viruses: Vaccines and Therapeutics» represented a new promising candidate for the development of T-cell based universal inﬂuenza vaccines.

Within the last decade signiﬁcant progress has been accomplished in the ﬁeld of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The articles in this special topics series «Immune Tolerance Post Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation» present progress in improving clinical outcomes using some of the most vibrant current research and translational approaches, including novel reduced-intensity conditioning regimens, donor graft engineering, quantiﬁcation of themicrobiome, and tailored immunosuppressive therapies. Much of the progress described is due to improvements in immune reconstitution that results in durable allograft tolerance. Consequently, there is reduced graft-vs.-host disease (GVHD) and improvement in controlling infectious disease complications. In addition, improved immune reconstitution also appears to facilitate much-needed graft-vs.-leukemia eﬀects, as relapse remains the major challenge of our ﬁeld. Many of the articles in this special topics series are organized around our increasing understanding of GVHD and a suite of new tools and approaches to prevent and treat this dreaded immune complication.

The ﬁeld of Primary Immunodeﬁciencies (PID) is growing fast. In «Primary Immunodeficiencies Worldwide» over 400 diseases are deﬁned and characterized by recurrent or chronic infections, autoimmunity, allergy, inﬂammation, or cancer as a consequence of genetic alterations aﬀecting the immune system. The overall incidence of PID is around 1:10,000 and the majority presents early in childhood. Over the past decades, there has been an enormous increase in understanding of disease pathology, as well as clinical expertise and patient awareness worldwide, as a result of educational initiatives and scientiﬁc meetings by medical societies, supporting agencies, and patient associations. Humans are genetically heterogeneous, and the environmental characteristics and social habits diﬀer dramatically in the several geographic regions of the world. Consequently, theprevalenceand distribution of the nine groups of primary immunodeﬁciencies vary worldwide, and the clinical proﬁle of a particular PID will also vary. Most of the literature and discoveries about Primary Immunodeﬁciencies come from North America and Europe and refer to these geographical areas. This Frontiers Research Topic was developed to bring together original clinical and basic research from authors representing various geographical areas to highlight challenges and developments in epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of Primary Immunodeﬁciencies worldwide.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as one of the greatest global challenge to public health in the twenty-ﬁrst century. It is imperative to search alternative therapeutics and strategies to combat AMR and diminish the exacerbated use of antibiotics. In this special issue «Alternative Therapeutics Against Antimicrobial-Resistant Pathogens» we present 26 articles that highlight the use of novel peptides, phage-based therapies, nanomedicine, contemporary and alternative medicines, plant (herbal), and bacteria based antimicrobials as potential alternatives to combat multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. The articles are categorized in diﬀerent groups, including (i) Antimicrobial nanoparticles against drug resistant bacteria, (ii) Bacteriophages: A promising approach to ﬁght MDR, (iii) Anti bioﬁlm agents, (iv) Antimicrobial peptides, (v) Eﬄux pump inhibitors, and (vi) Host /Pathogen directed therapies.

As Alexander Fleming predicted in 1945, bacteria have become increasingly resistant to antibiotics. Penicillin resistance was presumably ﬁrst reported already in 1940 when Abraham and Chain reported that an enzyme from bacteria was able to destroy penicillin (Abraham and Chain, 1940). Every now and then mankind is shelled with news of infections and deaths caused by antibiotic and multiple drug resistant superbugs. This increase of resistance toward commonly in-use antibiotics, due to decades of their use, misuse and abuse, is today a global health concern. Research investments on development of new agents that can ﬁght antimicrobial resistant microorganisms and the advent of antibiotic failure due to bacterial resistance has raised interest in other non-conventional alternative therapies. This Research Topic gathers some of the latest science around antibiotic alternatives and the eﬀect of combined therapies. The call was launched in July 2017, and open-call papers were submitted until May 2018. This is the editorial article «Antibiotic Alternatives and Combinational Therapies for Bacterial Infections» introducing the 20 accepted publications addressing the antimicrobial action of varied agents representing the breadth and scope of research in this topic.

Microbes are ubiquitous and have ecological interactions with almost all life forms. Likewise, humans invariably engage in host-microbial interactions that could induce short-term or long-term effects. Some of these long-term crossover interactions have allowed successful colonization of microbes within or on the human body, collectively known as the human microbiome or human microbiota. The human microbiome is identified as playing a key role in various physiological processes like digestion, immunity, defense, growth, and development. Any dysbiosis in the human microbiome structure could induce the onset of various metabolic or physiological disorders. Cumulatively, the human microbiome is considered as a virtual human organ that is essential for host survival. Additionally, short-term biological interactions of the host and microbes have exposed microbes to the human cellular system. This exposure could have allowed the microbes to invade human cells for their growth and reproduction-induced onset of various infectious diseases. This book «Role of Microbes in Human Health and Diseases» incorporates a number of studies highlighting the role of microbes in human health and diseases.

Health care for obvious reasons has become an even more relevant – or at least more publicly discussed – topic in the past two years in the wake of the Covid19-pandemic. Digitalisation and its consequences for all areas of society has been a very much debated topic over the last decade. The combination of health care and digital solutions in that sector has become one of the focal points of attention when discussing how to deal with a pandemic of the scale of Covid19. Even though one wished that it would not need such a type of proof for the relevance of finding adequate digital solutions in order to offer more effective services whilst respecting the legal framework and noteably fundamental rights such as the right to privacy, it can be seen as a confirmation of the relevance of the research topic in the book «Data Protection by Design in the E-Health Care Sector. Theoretical and Applied Perspectives».

Confronting quality-of-care problems and achieving cost containment in healthcare delivery is one of the greatest challenges for the twenty-first century. Realising the promise of eHealth for ensuring sustainability of Europe’s healthcare systems is becoming urgent. When seen in a context of increasing needs for health personnel, growth in chronic disease, an ageing population and a consequential expected rise in public health expenditures, the successful utilisation of information and communication technologies becomes crucial. The eHealth Strategies Report prepared on behalf of the European Commission, Directorate General Information Society and Media, in 2011, points to implementation as a key challenge: “Reaching agreement about eHealth strategies and, even more so, implementing them has almost everywhere proven to be considerable more complex and time-consuming than initially anticipated. The complexity of eHealth as a management challenge was vastly underestimated”. If we want substantial advancements in healthcare information infrastructures, we need knowledge on actual experiences, and the contributions in the book «Information Infrastructures within European Health Care. Working with the Installed Base» aim to give the readers a better grip on what facilitates and hinders successful implementation and utilization.

This book «Anti-Vivisection and the Profession of Medicine in Britain. A Social History» was conceived during a sabbatical funded by the Wellcome Trust (grant number 104505/Z/14/Z). I am very grateful to them for their support and to Professor Joe Cain and the staff of the department of Science and Technology Studies at University College London for hosting me. New medical data is generated every second, adding to the source of potential “rawmaterial” required for generating innovative and groundbreaking medical insightsand expanding knowledge about health and well-being. For the first time in history, technologies exist that enable rapid and large-scale analysis of collected data, bringing the possibility of personalizing medicine within reach. Such positive prospects are countered by serious ethical, social, and legal challenges. Procedures for accessing medical data for research purposes, as well as for the reuse of medical data from clinical trials or studies, are in place and include safeguards to protect individual rights. However, no comprehensive scheme to donate one’s medical data posthumously exists, with the consequence of depriving individuals of the opportunity to act according to their moral values and preventing valuable datasets from being used in scientific research for the promotion of the public good. While the debate around the use of big data in medicine is far from new, this volume «The Ethics of Medical Data Donation» is the first to address the ethical issues with regard to the use of medical data after death. It brings together academic experts from ethics, law, and medical sciences to address the challenges associated with medical data donation. It is the result of a project developed at the Digital Ethics Lab at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, and funded by Microsoft Research.

The culture of safety in the care environment and of human factors influencing it should be developed from the beginning of medical studies and in the first years of professional practice, in order to have the maximum impact on clinicians' and nurses' behavior. Medical errors tend to vary with the level of proficiency and experience, and this must be taken into account in adverse events prevention. Human factors assume a decisive importance in resilient organizations, and an understanding of risk control and containment is fundamental for all medical and surgical specialties. The goal of this open access book «Rethinking Health Care Ethics» is to develop an approach to clinical health care ethics that is more accessible to, and usable by, health professionals than the now-dominant approaches that focus, for example, on the application of ethical principles. The book elaborates the view that health professionals have the emotional and intellectual resources to discuss and address ethical issues in clinical health care without needing to rely on the expertise of bioethicists. The early chapters review the history of bioethics and explain how academics from outside health care came to dominate the field of health care ethics, both in professional schools and in clinical health care. The middle chapters elaborate a series of concepts, drawn from philosophy and the social sciences, that set the stage for developing a framework that builds upon the individual moral experience of health professionals, that explains the discontinuities between the demands of bioethics and the experience and perceptions of health professionals, and that enables the articulation of a full theory of clinical ethics with clinicians themselves as the foundation. Against that background, the first of three chapters on professional education presents a general framework for teaching clinical ethics; the second discusses how to integrate ethics into formal health care curricula; and the third addresses the opportunities for teaching available in clinical settings.
